book cover decisions

As I get further into Graphic Design, I'm expecting that it may take over this blog completely, which may not be too big a deal to the three of you that still read this, but for my own records and for the future, here are new covers I've been working on after critique:

I like the third one best.

I don't remember any snakes in East of Eden. But it's been a while since I've read it and it's a really long book, where details like that might get lost. But it's definitely not about snakes in general.

Anyway, it's a really good book. You should read it.

@Ammon, that's the one I'm leaning towards too, even though it took the least amount of time.

@Jacob, No there's not any snakes per se, I originally liked the snake idea for 2 reasons, 1 the title has "eden" in it, it's supposed to be a retelling of the Cain and Abel story and I think one of the core themes of the book is we all have a choice, or timshel if you will. The other reason is we watched a video of a famous book cover designer (apparently there is such a thing) and he said "So many publishing companies say "don't put a snake on the cover" so being the Rebel Without a Cause or Sense of Direction that I am, I thought it'd be cool to do a snake cover. I made the first cover and they hated it (the teacher and his friends, mostly) so I tried a few more.

And I think I will read it, the quotes from it and plot outline seemed really good, plus Steinbeck said that he felt every book he'd written before were all in preparation to this book.

thanks for your comments and in case you've read this. :)

I think you should do one of Adam and Eve in Eden with leaves of lettuce covering their privates because lettuce plays a huge role in the book and it's still a Biblical allusion. Also the lettuce should somehow be melting (also from the book). Melting lettuce + privates = winner. Your snake tree is very cool btw.
